Avalanche is quickly becoming one of the hottest blockchains for NFT gaming. Standout games such as Crabada and Defi Kingdoms have achieved record volumes on Avalanche and are even overtaking popular games on other blockchains.
The majority of current NFT games on Avalanche are little more than Defi apps that pull users in with different incentive mechanisms such as growing a character or levelling items.
In our experience, unless you’re early, the passive income potential from gaming is non-existent and the majority of players get sucked into the level-up loop and don’t actually draw out profits at critical times. This leaves the flipping of the NFT as the primary source of profit and in our opinion, this is not truly what makes “game” experiences great.
Genuine AAA games can take large teams at least 2 years to make, costing upwards of $80 million. Most projects that promise AAA quality are relying upon the community’s lack of knowledge. Put in perspective, a project that is minting 10,000 NFTs would need to be minted at $8,000 per NFT to approach this figure and they could be many years away from a finished product.
As you can see, we are fairly sceptical about the term “AAA” being used in the pre-launch of many of the current games. However, we are very excited about the future of gaming on Avalanche. Games such as Shrapnel and Castle Crush are going in the right direction and give us genuine hope.

For example, Shrapnel has a core team of gaming industry veterans and Wildlife Studios is one of the top ten mobile gaming creators in the world. They have the knowledge and skills to create what has been promised and they will almost certainly create a product that we can all enjoy.
The real promise lies in a game that you can truly invest in, not just money but also time spent that will actually enrich your life, through storytelling and experiences. Whether this also includes in-game items, paying to level up, or passive income opportunities that increase your enjoyment, the next era of gaming is yet to begin.
We know the future and innovation of blockchain gaming will most definitely be on Avalanche Subnets, but it may be some time before we see a true AAA game with all the bells and whistles.
