Tubby Reindeer had all the hallmarks of a successful NFT project when it launched in late September 2021, the artistic style was PFP worthy and adopted by some key figures such as CryptoSeq in the Avalanche scene.

The project website was fluid and well thought out. Twitter engagement was genuine and the Discord had a really positive community vibe. There would only be 5000 unique Tubby Reindeers available at a cost of 2.5 AVAX (approximately $170 at the time) and they would go on to sell out within 9 hours.

When the mint was complete, communication from the Development Team became few and far between and this led to some heated debates amongst the community, regarding the future of the project and perceived promises being broken. More than a few community members became vocal on Twitter about what they saw as failures in the project, tagging influential Avalanche figures to try and get answers.

The response from the Development Team can be summarised as follows: They were only interested in creating artistic PFP NFTs and did not consider or promise anything outside of the artistic value, besides royalties and becoming verified collections on secondary markets such as NFtrade, Yetiswap and Kaleo. They did not anticipate the huge surge in demand and did not mislead the community, in fact, they didn’t even have the usual “Roadmap” on the website, which certainly adds credibility to their claims of being artists over developers.

We think this was a case of the NFT community hoping for more and not seeing the project for what it really was, art above all else.
